Adventures around the Isle of
Arran (4th to 8th April 2008) -
More photos
We set
sail from Largs yacht haven on Friday
afternoon, sailing around the Great Cumbrae
Island and into Millport harbour to anchor
overnight. On Saturday morning, we departed
Millport and sailed around the north coast
of Arran, through the Bute Sound and past
the Cock of Arran. The journey continued
west along the coast of Arran, through
Kilbrannan Sound and into Campbeltown for an
overnight stay. With winds of up to 28
knots, May Be was able to reach boat speeds
of 10 knots.

On Sunday, May Be left Campbeltown for some
fast sailing to Lamlash harbour around the
east coast of Arran. Even stronger winds of
30 knots meant that May Be reached 11 knots
of boat speed. After leaving Lamlash, May Be
sailed back to Millport for an overnight
stay. Everyone commented what a great
weekend of sailing was had. Finally, we
motored back to Largs with some 'man over
board' practice drills en route.

Caledonian Canal / Loch Ness
trip (October
2007) -
More photos
We decided to do a
transit of the "Great Glen" from Inverness
in the NE to Fort William in the SW through
the stunning countryside of Loch Ness and
the Caledonian Canal.
The Caledonian Canal
was completed in 1822 to enable British
warships in the days of sail to cross
Scotland without having to round the North
coast with its often severe weather. There
are some 29 man-made locks which May Be had
to pass through in addition to the natural
lochs which form part of the canal. The
width of the locks were built to accommodate
a frigate of the time, so May Be was able to
pass through without any problems. May Be
attracted considerable attention as it's not
often a Tall Ship passes through the canal.

Hull
Maritime Festival (1st to 2nd September 2007)
This festival
celebrates the long history of Hull as a
major port and the social life that goes
with it. May Be spent the weekend in the
Hull marina and took part in the festival
along with many other tall ships and old
vessels.
You can read a report of the weekend at the
Hull City Council's website.
