Life on a sailing voyage

On a sailing voyage we never use the word itinerary, as skippers will always be aiming for the best sailing and shore landings for the forecast and most idyllic or sheltered anchors and ports. They are as keen as you to include some of the highlights describe, but you have to go with Mother Nature, not fight her. The description below is based on what we think might be possible, based on past trips, or experience, but nothing is guaranteed on a sailing voyage. If the following voyage description is not fulfilled for any reason, Maybe Sailing and Maybe Sailing Youth Initiative cannot be held responsible.

VOYAGE DESCRIPTION

Join us for an unforgettable 11-night hands-on sailing adventure aboard the 1929 gaff ketch Maybe, sailing from the Menai Strait to the River Humber via the world-famous Caledonian Canal.
This is a true sail training voyage where you’ll become an active member of the crew from the moment you step aboard. Whether you’re completely new to sailing or already have experience, you’ll learn by doing – taking the helm, setting and trimming sails, standing watch, navigating and working alongside our professional crew as you embrace life aboard a traditional tall ship.
Leaving the Menai Strait behind, we’ll head north into ever-changing waters, combining rewarding offshore passages with stunning coastal sailing before making our way through the spectacular Caledonian Canal. Cutting through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, this remarkable waterway is one of the world’s greatest inland cruising routes. You’ll experience its impressive locks, dramatic mountain scenery and, of course, keep a lookout as we pass through the legendary Loch Ness – perhaps you’ll even spot its famous resident!
Life at sea is never predictable, and that’s all part of the adventure. Our exact route and overnight stops will be shaped by the weather, tides and the wind, giving every voyage its own unique character. Every day brings new challenges, new scenery and new opportunities to develop your sailing skills while working together as a crew.
This voyage also offers fantastic opportunities to experience some of the UK’s richest wildlife. Keep a watchful eye for dolphins riding the bow wave, playful seals, porpoises and, with a little luck, whales. The skies are alive with seabirds, from gannets and fulmars to puffins in season, while the waters around Scotland are renowned for their incredible marine life. As we make our way south, we’ll sail past internationally important wildlife areas, including the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne, where thousands of seabirds and one of England’s largest grey seal colonies make their home.
Whether you’re steering the ship on a night watch, helping to hoist the sails, sharing stories over dinner or watching the sun set from the deck, every day aboard Maybe is a new adventure. You’ll leave with new skills, lasting friendships and memories of an extraordinary voyage through some of the most spectacular waters in the British Isles.
